The medicinal and aromatic plants as a group within the special crops are characterized by a high number of cultivated species. In addition, outside of Germany, wild collections are still of great importance for covering the international market for herbal drugs.

The secondary metabolites form the valuable ingredients for all species used. This results in a high analytical effort for the quality determination. The breeding improvement of medicinal and aromatic plants usually starts with a large variability. The developments in molecular genetic methods mean that they can also be used for cultures with a relatively low level of knowledge. The legal regulations and specifications, such as good agricultural practice (GACP), good manufacturing practice (GMP) and the pharmacopoeia in Germany (Ph.Eur., DAB, HAB) also contribute to the special position of medicinal and aromatic plants in the process of breeding improvement. Working group 17 Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (AG17) within the Society for Plant Breeding (GPZ) is dedicated to these complex issues. Symposia are held on selected topics. The aim is to combine the activities of AG17 also with conferences that also deal with other aspects of the value chain from plants to phytopharmaceuticals.
